What Are My School's Duties Under the Law?

*Not legal advice — check with your lawyer.

1. Inspect new electrical equipment for damage before use

In the Northern Territory, the Workplace Health and Safety Regulations (150 & 151) require electrical equipment to be inspected for damage before being used (if it's new).

Maximum fine for failure: $18,000

2. Regularly inspect & test electrical equipment

Equipment must be regularly inspected and tested "by a competent person" if it is powered from an electrical power socket and used somewhere it's more likely to become damaged.

Maximum fine for failure: $18,000

3. Tag & document every test

You need to keep accurate records of each and every legally required test — until the next test, or until the equipment is thrown out.

Maximum fine for failure: $6,000

4. Withdraw used & untested equipment

Electrical equipment that is used and untested must be withdrawn from use — immediately.

Maximum fine for failure: $18,000

We strictly follow the Australia/New Zealand Standard AS/NZS 3760:2010 — the 42 page document which lays out the specifications for proper electronic testing. Our experienced engineers have a process to make sure your electricals are compliant to the 3760:2010 standard, so your school is safe.

If any piece of equipment fails our rigorous examination, it'll be immediately tagged and flagged — to make sure no risk is spread.

Don't Risk the Dangers to Your Students, Staff & Property

Have You Regularly Had Your Electrical Devices Inspected?

Electrical Shock

Direct electrical shock can injure employees, customers or students. RCD devices may not protect in some cases.

Electrical Fires

Unsafe electrical appliances can cause electrical fires — loss of property, productivity, injury or death.

Non-Compliance

NT health & safety law requires electrical devices to be inspected regularly. Managers are responsible for a safe workplace.

Uninsured

Operating unsafe electrical devices may void your insurance. Don't risk not being insured.

Downtime Loss

Operational downtime costs your school. Prevention is the best strategy to keep operating.
